Outside Zone from Shotgun Spread Flex 11 personnel sends the RB on a lateral zone track behind the offensive line, reading the blocking flow from playside to backside as the line executes a coordinated zone slide toward the call side. This is a zone run play built to stretch defensive ends and outside linebackers horizontally, forcing them to widen before the back plants and cuts upfield off his blockers' hips. The primary read is the playside double team and edge defender: bounce outside if the edge is sealed, bend it back to the cutback lane if the backside pursuit overplays the stretch.
Check the depth and width of the defensive ends and outside linebackers before the snap, since outside zone struggles when edge defenders play tight and squeeze the stretch immediately. Watch for a nine technique or wide 5 tech alignment that can blow up the zone stretch before the back gets outside. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange, where the playside linebacker crashes down and the backside end contains, which kills the cutback read. User a linebacker to spy the cutback lane and trigger downhill as soon as the RB shows his eyes to the backside gap. This play is vulnerable to inside blitzes and A gap pressure, so look for stacked interior alignments or a Mike linebacker showing blitz depth pre-snap as a sign the run could get blown up before it develops.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since outside zone loses value against stacked fronts with extra run support. Use pre-snap motion or a formation flip to identify if the defense is playing gap-sound run fits or shifting toward pass shell alignment. Hot route the backside receiver into a quick screen or bubble if you see the defense selling out to stop the run, giving you an outlet without changing the play call. Pair this with PA Deep Outs or Y Cross Flood out of the same formation to keep linebackers honest once you establish the zone run, since both plays share the same pre-snap look. Run this on early downs, second and short, or short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to load the box, then punish overaggressive fits with a cutback lane.
