PA Jet Sweep is a play-action design out of the Shotgun Spread Flex 11 personnel that sells the jet motion sweep fake before the QB pulls into a drop back shot play. The jet motion forces linebackers and flowing safeties to bite on the perimeter run action, opening up vertical windows behind them. This is a shot play built to beat man coverage and single high shells, with the primary read progressing from the deep outside shot route to the intermediate crosser working underneath as the secondary check down.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety pre-snap since this play is designed to attack Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells where the jet action pulls a defender out of the deep third. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash down hard on the jet fake you have a clean throwing lane over the middle for the crossing route. Beware Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties who stay disciplined, since they can sit on the shot route and take away the deep half. User the play side linebacker or flowing safety yourself to jump the jet sweep fake and stay in phase with the crosser if you suspect play-action. Look for disguised zone blitzes where the edge defender crashes on the jet motion but a linebacker drops into a deep zone lurk, which can bait the QB into an interception on the shot route.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the sweep side, then check if the defense shifts a safety down to respect the run before the snap.

Save this play for second and short or first and ten situations where defenses expect Inside Zone or Outside Zone based on your tendencies earlier in the game.

Pair PA Jet Sweep with Inside Zone and Outside Zone in your play-calling sequence so defenders start keying run fits, making the play-action fake far more effective.

If the corner presses at the line and the safety cheats to a two high shell, hot route your underneath crosser into a quick out to punish soft zone drops instead of forcing the deep shot.

Take a shot down the field on early downs only after you have established the jet sweep or Speed Option tag in the same set to condition the defense's eye discipline.
