Slot Flags out of Shotgun Spread Flex sends both outside receivers on shallow crossing routes toward the opposite sideline while the two inside receivers run a corner and out combo on the right side, with the backfield player releasing on a wheel route up the sideline. This is a flood concept built to overload one side of the field vertically and horizontally, making it a strong Cover 3 beater and effective man beater against man coverage since the crossing routes create natural rub separation. The primary read progression starts with the corner route on the right, works down to the flat/wheel route underneath, and comes back to the deep crosser if the initial flood is covered.
Defensive Reads
Identify single high safety pre-snap since Slot Flags is designed to exploit the natural void created between deep and underneath zones in Cover 3. Watch the flat defender or nickel corner on the flood side, if he sinks with the out route the wheel route from the backfield can get behind him for a big play. Against man coverage, key on the cornerback covering the corner route receiver, if he presses at the line the receiver's release becomes critical to beating the jam and separating downfield. Be alert for a user lurk defender sitting in the passing lane between the corner and out routes, this is the most common way aggressive human defenders take away the primary read. This concept struggles against a two high shell with disciplined zone drops since the flood route combination gets bracketed by both a deep half safety and an underneath defender working in tandem.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for single high safety alignment since the flood side corner and wheel combo stresses Cover 3 defenders who have to cover multiple levels with only one deep defender to that side.
If the cornerback is playing tight man coverage on the corner route receiver, throw with anticipation before the break since the route will win on separation at the top of the stem.
Use the wheel route out of the backfield as a checkdown against zone coverage when linebackers sink into the flood side hook zones and take away the intermediate throws.
Combine this play with Y Stick or Mesh from the same set to punish defenses that start selling out to stop the flood concept after seeing Slot Flags on tape.
Best called on second and medium to long third down situations where the multiple route levels give you access to both a quick underneath option and an explosive deep shot.
