Breakdown

Slot Flags is a five man route concept out of Shotgun Spread Flex 11 personnel that creates a natural flood to the right side while stretching the field horizontally to the left. On the right, the outer WR runs a corner route, the slot receiver runs an out that settles underneath it, and the HB releases into a flat route out of the backfield, forming a high low low three level flood. On the left, the WR runs a deep comeback style route while the TE runs an out breaking underneath, giving a two man man beater combo away from the flood. This is a Cover 3 beater and man beater designed to attack a single deep defender or a man corner on either side, with the primary read starting at the corner route on the flood side and working down to the flat if the corner is capped.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone defender on the flood side, since if they widen with the HB it opens a throwing lane to the out route behind them Key the single high safety pre snap, since a true single high alignment tells you the corner route has a soft spot to attack against Cover 3 Against man coverage, look at the slot corner leverage on the out route side, since inside leverage invites the comeback route to win outside Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the flood zone or lurking underneath the corner route, as this can bait a costly interception if the QB does not go through the full progression This play struggles against Cover 4 or match zone concepts where the corner and safety both wall off the flood route, so be ready to check down to the flat or backside out if those shells are shown

Usage Tips

Pre snap identify if the safety is showing single high or two high, since Slot Flags is built to punish Cover 3 with the flood on one side and man coverage on the other with the comeback and out combo

Start your eyes on the corner route to the flood side, and if the deep defender jumps it work down to the out route and then to the HB flat as your checkdown against a hard close

Use this on third and medium to third and long situations where you need a defined high low read against zone or a rub heavy man beater against man coverage

If the defense shows Cover 2 or two high shells, flip your read to the backside comeback and TE out combo since the flood side becomes congested against two deep defenders

Pair this with Y Cross Flood or Four Verticals in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on the flood concept, forcing them to respect vertical shots over the middle as well
