Y Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread Flex sends both outside receivers vertical on go routes to stretch the deep coverage, while the slot receiver runs a shallow drag underneath from the opposite side that crosses the field. The TE runs the namesake shallow cross into the middle of the field, sitting in the void behind the linebackers, and the HB releases on a check release flat route to the boundary as an outlet. This is a classic zone beater built around the shallow drag and flat combo underneath while the two verticals hold safeties deep, with the primary read progression going shallow cross first, then check down to the HB flat if the middle is clogged, then work back to the verticals if the defense sells out on the underneath routes.

Defensive Reads

Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells are vulnerable to this play because the shallow cross exploits the seam between underneath zone defenders and deep coverage responsibilities. Watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting directly in the shallow cross lane, that indicates the defense is scheming to take away the primary read and you should progress to the HB flat immediately. Man coverage with no safety help over the top can be attacked with the outside verticals since crossing traffic often creates natural rubs that spring the receiver open. Blitz-heavy defenses that bring extra rushers leave the shallow cross wide open since there are fewer defenders left to sink into underneath zones, so expect a quick throw if you see pressure at the snap. A user-controlled linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the shallow drag lane is the biggest threat to this concept, so recognize that jump and reset to the flat or verticals rather than forcing the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage and give you a soft underneath window for the shallow cross.

Read the middle linebacker at the snap, if he sits at the sticks or gets pulled by the shallow crosser it opens a throwing lane for the drag to pick up easy yards after the catch.

Hot route the HB flat into a wheel route against man coverage to turn a checkdown into a big play down the sideline.

Pair this with Mesh or Inside Cross from the same set so the defense has to prepare for multiple crossing concepts and cannot key on one shallow route.

Against zone shells with deep half safeties, trust the verticals to occupy the corners and safeties long enough for the shallow cross to sit in the open grass for a quick strike.
