Breakdown

Z Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Spread Flex is a man beater built around a shallow crosser that clears the middle of the field underneath while two vertical routes stretch the deep zones on the same side. The backside receiver runs a deep flag while the inside receiver on that side breaks off a square-in, and the back releases into a short angle route out of the backfield as a checkdown or blitz beater. The primary read starts with the shallow crosser working from the strong side to the weak side, then progresses to the square-in behind it before checking down to the running back if the underneath window is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment, if both safeties are deep and evenly spaced you are likely facing a two high shell that can bracket the vertical routes on the outside. Watch the flat defender and slot cornerback at the snap, if they sink too deep into their zone drops the shallow crosser will have a wide open throwing lane underneath. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender for a lurk, a smart user will sit in the shallow crosser's path to jump the route, so be ready to progress to the square-in or running back checkdown. This play struggles against zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders who stay flat footed and read the quarterback's eyes, since the crosser has nowhere to sit down. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt timing on the shallow cross, so identify pre-snap if the defense is stacking the box or showing an overload look before committing to the deep drop.

Usage Tips

Attack this concept versus man coverage since the shallow crosser creates natural rub separation against man defenders trailing across the field.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, this play thrives against single high because the deep flag and vertical route occupy the free safety.

Hot route the running back into a wider release if you see a linebacker sitting in the shallow crosser's path, this keeps your checkdown clean against blitz looks.

Use this on early downs in 1st and 2nd and medium distance situations to keep the defense honest before dialing up Mesh or Y Shallow Cross later in the drive for a similar look with a different answer.

Pair this play with Four Verticals in your call sheet, if the defense starts jumping the shallow crosser with underneath defenders you can burn them deep with the exact same formation and personnel.
