The diagram shows the two outside receivers on vertical stems that break to the sideline, the inside slot running a deep clear-out route up the seam, the TE running a shallow drag from right to left across the formation, and the RB checking into a short flat route off the backfield. The primary read starts with the shallow crosser working left to right underneath the linebackers, then progresses to the flat route from the RB as a checkdown, and finally to the two outside breaking routes if the defense bites down on the underneath stuff. This is a man beater at its core since the shallow drag creates natural rub traffic and separation against man coverage, but it also holds up against zone due to the layered spacing between the crosser, flat, and outside breaking routes.

Defensive Reads

As the defense, key the TE at the snap since the shallow drag is the first and most dangerous route in this concept, a user controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow zone can jump this route and bait a turnover. Watch for the RB checking into the flat, if the offense is facing pressure this becomes the quick outlet, so a linebacker spying underneath can close throwing lanes and force a checkdown into a tackle for minimal gain. Cover 3 zone with a hard sink from the flat corner can take away both the shallow cross and the flat route simultaneously, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and look to the outside breaking routes late. Press man coverage on the outside receivers disrupts their vertical stems and buys time for the underside coverage to rally to the shallow crosser, making this a strong answer against man heavy playcalls. If the offense calls this on third and long, expect them to push the ball to the outside breaking routes early, so keep safeties deep and disciplined instead of jumping the shallow crosser too aggressively.
