Breakdown

Four Verticals from Shotgun Spread Flex sends all four eligible receivers vertical, with both outside receivers stemming straight up the numbers and both slot receivers running seams up the hashes. The lone running back releases up the middle as a check-release option, giving the quarterback five potential vertical stems to attack the deep half of the field. This is a classic zone beater built to stretch Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells horizontally and vertically, forcing safeties to pick a lane while the quarterback works a high-low progression from the seams to the outside verts.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the safeties, two deep safeties who stay wide signals Cover 2 and the seams are your primary window A single high safety at depth indicates Cover 3 or Cover 1, work the seam away from his rotation and trust the outside vert to win on the boundary corner Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the middle linebacker sinks fast into a deep zone drop he can rob the inside seams, so widen your read to the outside verts User-controlled safeties will often lurk in the deep middle to bait the seam throw, if you see the safety drift away from his zone shell pre-throw expect a jump on the inside route Man coverage with no safety help over the top is a bust for the defense, this play wins immediately against Cover 0 or Cover 1 blitzes since every route stretches vertically past the sticks

Usage Tips

Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are shaded deep and tight you are looking at Cover 2 and the seam routes will split the hashes for explosive gains

Against Cover 3 identify the deep third defender and throw opposite his leverage, the single high safety cannot cover both seams so pick the side he vacates

Use hot routes to convert one outside vert into a comeback or dig if you diagnose zone coverage late, this keeps the defense honest without abandoning the vertical stress

Pair this call with Mesh or Y Stick earlier in a drive so the defense respects underneath route combos, then hit Four Verticals off a similar formation to catch safeties creeping up

Best used on second and long or any explosive-play situation where you need to punish a defense playing soft zone or trying to disguise a two-high shell
