Y Cross Flood lines up out of Shotgun Spread Flex with 11 personnel and stresses the field with a true flood concept to the right while a deep dig crosses the field from left to right. The outside receiver on the right runs a corner route up top, the TE runs a deep in/dig underneath it, and the HB releases out of the backfield on a flat route, stacking three levels to that side. On the backside, one receiver clears out vertically while the other runs an outlet route working back across the middle, giving you a built-in crosser if the flood side is capped. This is a zone beater at its core, designed to overload one half of the field and put a linebacker or safety in a hi-lo bind, with the primary read progression going flat to dig to corner based on how the underneath defender flows.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the free safety depth and alignment since a shaded safety to the flood side signals a coverage rotation that could jump the corner route. Post-snap, key the underneath linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the hook to curl zone, since his depth and width determine whether the dig route sits in a window or gets squeezed. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a lurk position over the crosser, as this is the single biggest threat to the play since it can undercut both the dig and the backside outlet route. Against Cover 3, the corner to the flood side is isolated deep with no safety help over the top if the safety rotates to the middle third, making that corner route a walk-in touchdown against poor angle or late reaction. Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties shut down the corner route but leave the flat and dig combo open underneath, so blitzing or disguised man coverage with no safety help is the fastest way to disrupt this concept before the flood routes develop.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether you are facing a two-high or one-high shell since this concept is built to punish single-high safety looks and Cover 3 rotations. If the corner to the flood side shows soft outside leverage, the corner route by the outside receiver becomes an immediate shot play, so look there first before working the flood underneath. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4, hot route the HB flat route to a wheel route if you see man coverage on the back, since it turns into an instant vertical winner against a linebacker in coverage. Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells, then follow it up with Y Shallow Cross or Mesh to attack the same flood side with quick-hitting man beaters if the defense starts rolling extra coverage to the trips look. Pair this with Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest on the deep corner route, since both plays start with similar vertical stems before diverging.
