Breakdown

PA Deep Outs runs a play-action fake out of Shotgun Spread Flex to hold the linebackers before attacking the field with a mix of out and go routes. The two outside receivers run deep outs breaking hard toward the sideline, the slot receiver on the near side runs a corner/go straight up the seam, and the backside receiver runs a shallow out crossing underneath. With no route dropping short in the middle of the field, this is a man beater designed to punish tight coverage and create natural rub opportunities against man defenders, and the primary read progression starts with the vertical seam route before working to the deep out on the boundary if the safety bites on the play fake.

Defensive Reads

Watch the near side cornerback depth before the snap. If he is playing tight man coverage, the deep out to that side is going to be open on the sideline break. Key the free safety after the play fake. If he steps up to respect the run, throw the vertical seam route immediately for a big play. Identify zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, since the deep outs will run into the cornerback's zone and get squeezed unless the seam route occupies the deep defenders. Look for a user controlled linebacker sitting in a lurk position over the shallow out route, since that is the most vulnerable route if the defense reads play-action quickly. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the play fake mesh point can leave the quarterback exposed if the offensive line does not account for the extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake with the analog stick or by holding the play-action button long enough to freeze linebackers, especially on early downs when defenses respect inside zone tendencies from this personnel group.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties tend to sit on the deep outs, so look to the vertical seam route as your first read against split safety shells.

Use hot routes to convert the backside shallow out into a quick flat route if you diagnose a blitz, giving yourself a fast outlet against pressure looks.

Pair this play with Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in a series so the play fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers start flowing downhill.

Best called on second and medium or third and long when you need explosive yardage, since the deep outs and seam route both attack past the sticks.
