Breakdown

Smash Corners lines up in Shotgun Spread Flex 11 personnel with two receivers stacked on each side of the formation. To the left, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route to the sideline while the inside receiver runs a quick hitch underneath, forming the classic Smash concept. To the right, the outside receiver also runs a deep corner while the inside slot runs an out and up double move, with the middle route breaking to a deep post/dig read over the top. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by stacking multiple deep routes on the numbers and forcing a safety to choose which corner route to cover, with the primary read progression starting on the right side corner route, working to the deep middle breaking route, then coming down to the left corner and hitch combo if the deep shots are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, since two safeties deep signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and one safety in the box signals Cover 3 or Cover 1. Post-snap, watch the flat defender on the corner route side, if he sinks with the corner route the hitch underneath will be open for an easy completion. Track the deep middle defender, in Cover 3 this defender has to cover a lot of ground and the deep breaking route can split the safety and the corner if he bites on either sideline route. Watch for user lurk defenders sitting in the passing lane of the deep middle route, a smart user will drop into that throwing window to bait a pick six. Man coverage with no safety help is the toughest matchup for this play since both corners can run with the deep routes, so be ready to check down to the hitch quickly before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and long or in two minute situations where you need a big chunk play against a soft zone shell.

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high, since Smash Corners is designed to put hard conflict on Cover 2 corners who have to choose between the hitch and the corner route.

If you see Cover 3 or a single high safety, prioritize the deep middle breaking route since that route will find the seam between the deep zones.

Hot route the backside hitch into a quick out if you get man coverage with no safety help, since it gives you a fast underneath answer against man beaters like Cover 1.

Pair this play in your call sheet with Y Stick or Quick Slants to keep defenses honest on early downs, then hit them with Smash Corners once they start sitting in shallow zone drops.
