Y Off Trips

SpecialistsGadgetSLWR

Overview

Y Off Trips lines up three receivers to one side with the tight end detached off the line as the Y, giving you a trips look out of Pistol depth without surrendering the balanced run threat. Unlike standard Pistol sets that keep the tight end attached inline, the off ball alignment lets the Y work vertically or into the flat untouched by press coverage, and it forces the defense to declare strength before the snap. The back sits directly behind the quarterback at Pistol depth, so Inside Zone Split, Counter GT Alert Smoke, Mtn Wide Zone, and Return HB Power all hit with the same downhill timing regardless of which way the trips side is set.

The 11 personnel grouping is the engine here. Defenses that answer trips with base personnel are stuck putting a linebacker on your slot or tight end, and defenses that go nickel or dime give up numbers to the run game against Counter Y and HB Slam. Either way you win a matchup. The isolated split end on the backside is the real prize: Stretch Alert X Lookie, HB Slam Alert Smoke, and Counter GT Alert Smoke all give you a one on one read with no help defender in the picture, which is exactly what you want against single high shells.

Concept variety is deep. Four Verticals and Mtn Seam Y Z-Choice attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 seams from a trips alignment where the number three receiver runs free through the hole. Curls, Slants, and Lead Swing Dbl Spot punish zone leverage underneath. The play action package (Return PA Seam Y Z-choice, PA Boot Slide, Mtn PA Boot RT, PA Scissors, PA Double Post, Return PA Middle Divide, Fake Screen Wheel) sells the Pistol run action and buys deep shot windows. Add Y Lead Read Option for the RPO element and the Gadget tag plays, and you have a set that can run an entire game plan without ever changing formation.

Strengths

  • Four Verticals and Mtn Seam Y Z-Choice flood the trips side seams and stress Cover 3 and Cover 4 safeties who cannot cover both the number two and number three vertical, and hot routing the outside receiver on a fade widens the corner even further.
  • Alert plays (Stretch Alert X Lookie, HB Slam Alert Smoke, Counter GT Alert Smoke) give you a pre snap isolated read on the backside split end with zero help defenders, which is a free completion against single high or heavy trips side rotation.
  • PA Scissors, PA Double Post, and Return PA Middle Divide sell Pistol run action and open big windows behind aggressive linebackers, especially against users who commit to jumping the run fit.
  • Pistol depth keeps run direction hidden, so Counter GT Alert Smoke, Return HB Power, Counter Y, and Mtn Wide Zone all look identical out of the backfield and force honest second level reads.
  • The off ball Y avoids press coverage entirely, making Slants, Curls, and Lead Swing Dbl Spot reliable man beaters when the defense puts a linebacker on your tight end.

Weaknesses

  • The trips alignment declares strength before the snap, so users can rotate coverage and overload the trips side, leaving your backside concepts as the only real answer.
  • Pistol depth means less time to set up screens, and HB Slip Screen dies quickly against edge pressure or a user defender who reads the release.
  • Only one back and one tight end means limited pass protection against mug and nano blitz looks, and interior pressure gets home before the deeper concepts develop.
  • Play action plays like Mtn PA Boot Slide and PA Boot Slide leave the rollout side exposed to a contain rusher, which turns big shots into negative plays.
  • Heavy nickel and dime opponents will squeeze the run game inside, and HB Dive, HB Slam, and HB Draw become predictable if you lean on them without pre snap motion.

Usage Tips

Read the defensive rotation over the trips side before the snap. If the defense stays balanced and puts a linebacker over your number three, go straight to Four Verticals or Mtn Seam Y Z-Choice and target the seam. If they rotate hard to trips, hit the alert route on the isolated backside receiver instead.

On early downs, alternate Inside Zone Split, Counter Y, and Mtn Wide Zone to keep run direction unpredictable, then use PA Boot Slide or PA Scissors off the same look once the linebackers start crashing.

Against mug looks and interior blitz threats, block your tight end or hot route the back on a flat and check to Slants or HB Slip Screen, since the quick game beats pressure before it arrives.

Use Y Lead Read Option and the Gadget plays in short yardage or when you need a chunk from a defense that has been sitting on your base run concepts.

Motion a trips receiver across the formation pre snap to identify man versus zone, then choose between Curls (zone beater) and Lead Swing Dbl Spot or Vertical TE Cross (man beaters) based on what the defender does.
