Y Lead Read Option is a run-heavy read option out of Pistol Y Off Trips with the QB and HB mesh point set behind an offensive line blocking a lead concept to the play side. The trips receivers to one side occupy the corner and safeties on the perimeter while the read defender (usually the play side end or OLB) determines whether the QB hands off or pulls and keeps. This is a pure run play designed to attack the edge of the defense, and the primary read progression is the QB reading the unblocked edge defender first before working downhill through the lead blocker's path.
Watch the play side defensive end or OLB pre-snap, if he widens out to take away the QB keep, the read should go to the HB dive quickly. Check for a stacked or crashing linebacker at the second level, since this play struggles against gap-sound run fits where the second level fills fast. Identify if the defense is showing a run blitz with extra defenders creeping into the box, this can beat the lead blocker before he reaches his target. Post-snap, feel for user-controlled defenders spying the QB, since a disciplined spy can eliminate the keep read and force the ball into a crowded box. This play is most effective against light boxes and passive read defenders, but it gets shut down by aggressive gap-shooting fronts and disciplined edge contain.
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify if the defense is in a light box with only six or seven defenders, since this play thrives when the numbers favor the run.
Look at the alignment of the play side end or OLB before the snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on run downs he is an easier key to read post-snap for the pull.
Use this on early downs in normal or run-heavy personnel situations to keep the defense honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Slam from the same set to give the defense multiple quick-hitting looks that all start from the same Pistol alignment, making it harder for defenders to jump the snap.
If the defense starts loading the box after a few successful reps, counter with Fake Screen Wheel or PA Boot Slide from this set to punish overaggressive linebackers flowing to stop the run.
