Dash Flood is a play-action flood concept out of Pistol Y Off Trips that stacks three receivers into the same vertical zone at different depths to overload a single side of the field. The trips side works a deep corner or go route, an intermediate flood route, and a shallow flat route, creating a high low read on any defender responsible for that zone while the backside stays lean for a checkdown or crossing route. This is primarily a zone beater designed to attack half field defenders and flat zone droppers, though the layered spacing also gives you access versus man coverage if the flat defender bites on the shallow route. The primary read progression starts high with the deep corner route to see if the safety commits, then works down to the intermediate flood route, and finishes with the flat as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Identify the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell signals the defense is prioritizing the deep corner route so plan to work the flood and flat routes underneath. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the intermediate route instead of staying home in the flat you have an easy throw underneath to the shallow receiver. Key the cornerback on the trips side, if he is playing hard outside leverage in man coverage the flood route behind him becomes the primary target since he cannot help over the top. This concept struggles against aggressive zone blitzes and cover 3 buzz calls where a linebacker drops into the flood zone late, so if you see pressure showing off the edge get through your progression quickly or check it down. Man match schemes with a lurking safety over the middle can rob the intermediate route, so be ready to reset to the flat or scramble drill if that safety flashes into the throwing lane.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard play fake to freeze linebackers and get a true look at whether you are facing a two high or single high safety shell before committing to the deep shot. If the cornerback on the trips side is playing off man, hot route the shallow flat receiver into a quick out to stress the flat defender immediately. Against zone heavy defenses, trust the high low read and let the flood route settle into the soft spot behind the underneath zone and in front of the deep zone. This play hits best on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more willing to sit in zone shells rather than blitz. Pair Dash Flood with Rollout Flood or Strong Flood in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on a single flood concept, and mix in HB Dive or HB Slam from the same personnel to keep run fits honest before coming back to this flood shot.
