HB Wide Zone Wk is a run play out of the Pistol Y Off Trips set that sends the offensive line in a lateral zone blocking scheme toward the weak side (away from the trips receiver bunch), with the fullback and tight end climbing to the second level to seal off linebackers. This is a pure run play designed to stress defensive gap discipline, letting the HB read blocks in real time and bounce outside or cut back inside based on how the front flows. The primary read progression starts with the play side edge defender: if he crashes down, bounce it outside behind the reach block, and if he stays home, look for the natural cutback lane created by flow to the frontside.

Defensive Reads

Read the play side defensive end or outside linebacker first, since a hard crash inside opens the bounce outside while a wide contain forces the cutback. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, as stacked or downhill linebackers signal a run blitz that can blow up zone timing, so be ready to check to a pass. Identify if the safety rotates down into the box post snap, which tells you the defense is selling out against the run and a cutback lane may not be there. This play struggles against gap exchange stunts and disciplined read and react linebackers who stay square and flow with zone action rather than overpursuing. It beats light boxes, one high safety looks with soft edge defenders, and defenses that overcommit to the trips side leaving the weak side alley wide open.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive front pre-snap and identify which side has fewer defenders in the box, since Wide Zone Wk hits best when the weak side is lighter than the trips side. Use your zone read vision reticle to trust the blocks and avoid overrunning the play, letting the line get to their landmarks before committing to a lane. Against stacked fronts or heavy blitz looks, motion the trips receiver or use a hot route to check into a quick game beater instead of forcing the run. Pair this play with Wide Zone and HB Zone from the same set to keep the defense guessing on strong versus weak side zone runs, then mix in RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Glance Post off similar formations to punish defenses that start cheating linebackers into the box. On third and short or second and manageable, this play works well because it forces linebackers to respect outside zone flow before you dial up a play-action shot like PA Stretch Shot later in the drive.
