PA Double Post is a play-action shot play out of Pistol Y Off Trips that attacks vertically down the seams. Off the run fake, both the Y (tight end) and the outside trips receiver break inside on post routes stacked on the same half of the field, while the backside single receiver runs a deep comeback breaking route to hold the corner. The play-action blocking sells the run fake up front to freeze linebackers and hold the safeties for a beat, and the primary read progression starts with the inside post (the shorter, tighter breaking route) before working to the deeper outside post if the middle of the field is occupied.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify whether the safeties are showing two high shells, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave natural seams between the corner and safety that the double posts exploit. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers biting hard on the run fake open up the throwing lanes for both post routes. Post-snap track the deep safety's hips, if he flows to the first post route immediately look to the second, deeper post breaking away from his rotation. Usage Tips

Use this out of run heavy personnel and tendencies so the play fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for that extra half second. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep with soft zone leverage this is your green light against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells. Hot route the backside comeback into a deep dig or another vertical if you diagnose man coverage with no safety help over the top. Sequence this behind RPO Glance Post or RPO Alert Slant earlier in a drive so the defense starts jumping underdneath routes, then hit them with the double post shot for an explosive gain. Best called on early downs or after a run play has softened the box, since obvious passing downs invite pressure that beats the play-action fake before routes develop.
