Play diagram for Vertical TE Cross from Pistol Y Off Trips in Madden 27

Quick Reference

Breakdown

Vertical TE Cross is a trips-based passing concept out of the Pistol Y Off Trips set that stresses the middle of the field with a deep crossing route while stacking two vertical routes on the boundary and one on the backside. The TE runs a deep crosser from the trips side all the way across the field, working underneath the two vertical routes on the right and giving the quarterback a dig-across window against zone drops, while the backside receiver runs a lone vertical to hold the single-coverage corner honest. This is a man beater and zone beater hybrid: the crosser creates natural separation against man coverage due to the horizontal traffic, while the verticals stretch zone defenders vertically and open the crosser behind linebackers. Primary read progression starts with the TE crosser working from the trips side, then progresses to the vertical route breaking outside on the right, and finally to the backside vertical route as a checkdown against single-high shells.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since two deep safeties indicate zone coverage that the crosser can exploit by settling in the intermediate middle void. Watch the linebacker depth at the snap, if they drop deep into zone drops the crosser will have a clean window, if they sink and wall the crosser this indicates a Tampa 2 or match zone shell. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable to the crosser rubbing off traffic near the formation, so look for defenders trailing tightly on the two vertical routes as confirmation of man coverage. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow to intermediate middle zone can jump the crosser route, so be ready to check down to the backside vertical or throw with anticipation before the defender reacts. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the timing of the crosser, so identify pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers creeping toward the line or safeties rotating late to confirm pressure looks.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or single-high safety looks, since the crosser has more room to operate against single-high man coverage.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, prioritize the crosser as it will settle into the void behind the linebackers and in front of the deep defenders.

Use hot routes to convert the backside vertical into a shorter option like a curl if you see a corner sitting in a deep third to bait an easy completion.

This play pairs well with Four Verticals in the same set since both plays sell vertical stems before diverging, making it hard for defenders to jump routes after seeing one or the other on tape.

Best used on early downs or second and medium situations where the crosser can pick up significant yards after the catch versus zone coverage before defenders can rally.

Combine with HB Slam Alert Smoke or HB Slip Screen out of the same formation to keep defenses honest against the run and short passing game before hitting the deep crosser for a big play.
