Mtn PA Boot Slide is a play-action bootleg out of Pistol Y Off Trips that uses run-fake motion to hold linebackers before the QB rolls opposite the trips side. Off the fake, the backside X runs a deep vertical up the numbers, the slot yellow route breaks hard outside on a corner route toward the sideline, and a shallow drag crosses underneath from the trips side to give the QB a quick outlet on the boot. The offensive line slides to protect the rollout, so this is a play-action man beater that isolates the deep corner route as the primary read with the underneath drag as the checkdown against pressure or tight man coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap, if they crash hard on the run fake this play is designed to exploit that vacated space with the drag and corner route. Key the deep safety alignment before the snap, a single high safety cheating late toward the boot side can jump the corner route and turn it into a pick six. Track the backside cornerback on the vertical route, if he sinks deep off the play fake it signals zone coverage and the QB should look to the drag route underneath instead. Watch for contain defenders crashing down on the run action, edge pressure that stays disciplined and boxes the rollout lane can force the QB to eat pressure or throw off platform. User linebackers spying the boot lane or sitting in the shallow drag window are the biggest threat, if the defense shows this look pre-snap consider audibiling to a different concept in the set.
Usage Tips
Run this out of a run-heavy personnel look so the play fake actually freezes linebackers and safeties before the boot develops.
Check the deep corner route first since it wins against off man and split safety looks, then work down to the shallow drag if the top of your read is covered.
Use pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and should trust the corner route.
Pair this with Mtn Wide Zone or HB Dive earlier in a series so the play fake sells and defenders bite on run keys before you dial this up.
Best used on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are geared to stop the run, since the rollout buys the QB extra time against edge pressure.
