Wide Zone is the outside zone run scheme out of Pistol Y Off Trips, designed to get the HB flowing laterally behind a zone blocking scheme that flows in unison to one side. The offensive line steps in unison toward the play side, reach blocking defenders and creating cutback lanes if the edge does not seal properly. The primary read progression is the HB reading the play side defensive end first (bounce, bend, or bang), then working through the zone combo blocks toward the backside cutback lane if the front flows too hard toward the play call.

Defensive Reads

Man defenders should key the play side offensive tackle and guard combo block to diagnose zone flow immediately and attack the gap before the double team seals it. Linebackers need to stay square and read the HB's aiming point instead of crashing on the snap, since patient backs will gash overpursuing defenders on the cutback. Defensive ends must maintain outside contain leverage and not get reached, forcing the run back inside into pursuit. Stacked fronts with an extra defender in the box shut this down quickly, so bringing an eighth man near the line via a run blitz or nano blitz package is effective versus this call. Watch for user controlled defenders spying the cutback lane since a disciplined backside linebacker sitting on the cutback can blow up the entire concept if the offensive line flows too far one direction.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Pistol with the trips side away from the run to pull defenders and safeties out of the box for a numbers advantage. Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has six or more defenders stacked against five blockers, consider audibling to a pass concept instead. Use motion or a hard count to see if linebackers flow early, which tells you whether to stick with the called zone side or trust the cutback. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Stretch in the same set to keep defenses guessing between inside and outside zone tempo. Against aggressive user defensive linemen who crash hard upfield, the cutback lane will be wide open so patience is key before hitting the hole. This is a strong early down call on first and second and short to medium yardage to stay balanced and set up play-action shots like PA Stretch Shot later in the drive.
