HB Split Dive is a downhill run play out of the Pistol formation designed to hit the interior gaps quickly before the defensive front can flow and fill. The offensive line uses a gap or man blocking scheme to create a direct crease at the point of attack, with the fullback or attached TE helping seal the first level. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO element, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial hole, read the play side guard's block, and cut off the block of the first unblocked defender rather than bouncing outside.
Watch for a stacked box with linebackers walked up to the line, since this signals a run blitz or gap exchange designed to beat interior dive concepts. Check safety alignment pre-snap. Two high shells with safeties sitting deep often leave light boxes that this play can exploit for extra yardage before the alley defenders arrive. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step. If he fires flat downhill immediately, the defense is likely running a run blitz or straight gap fill, so be ready to cut back against the grain. Look for defensive tackles slanting hard to one side pre-snap, which indicates a stunt or gap exchange scheme that can either blow up the dive or create a cutback lane depending on your blocking angle. Beware of a user controlled linebacker sitting in the A or B gap reading the mesh point closely, since this is the most common way human opponents shut down interior dive runs in competitive play.
Use this as a tempo controlling run in early down and distance situations, especially first and second and short, to keep the defense honest against your play-action shots like PA Boot RT or PA Slot Cross out of the same formation.
Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to RPO Glance Post or RPO Alert Bubble from this same set to punish overcommitment.
Identify linebacker depth before the snap. If the linebackers are sitting shallow or creeping toward the line, hit the hole with extra burst since the window will close fast against a downhill run fit.
Pair this play with HB Dive and HB Slam in your called sequence to condition the defense to bite on quick interior hits, then counter with HB Draw or Counter Y later in the series once they start jumping the snap.
Use manual control on the fullback or TE if the play is tagged with an in line blocker to seed extra push against a bigger nose tackle or 3 technique, especially in short yardage inside the ten.
