Breakdown

Rollout Flood is a play-action rollout concept out of Pistol Y Off Trips that puts the quarterback on the move to the trips side while stacking three receivers into a vertical flood read. The blocking scheme sells inside zone action before releasing the QB on the rollout, buying time against edge pressure while the flood concept (deep, intermediate, and shallow routes stacked on one side) attacks a single half of the field. It is a play-action man and zone beater, with the primary read progression going deep route first to clear coverage, then to the intermediate breaking route, and finally checking down to the shallow flood route underneath.

Defensive Reads

Check the strong safety depth before the snap, if he is shallow and near the box the deep flood route will have a clear runway against a blown coverage rotation Identify Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells by watching the corner to the trips side, if he sinks into a deep third or quarter the underneath flood routes become the primary answer Watch for a user linebacker spying the rollout lane, since a disciplined spy or contain defender can shut down the quarterback run threat and force a rushed throw Key the flow of the middle linebacker on the play-action fake, if he stays home and does not bite the run fake he can undercut the intermediate route in the flood This play struggles against Cover 2 Man or aggressive nano blitzes from the rollout side, since the extra rusher can beat the rollout protection before routes develop

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz before committing to the rollout side

Read the flow of the second level defenders on the play-action fake, if they bite hard on the run action the intermediate route will come open immediately

Against zone shells, work high to low on the flood since the deep route occupies the deep third defender and opens the window underneath

Against man coverage, target the shallow flood route in space since it creates a natural pick and rub against trailing defenders

Pair this play with HB Dive or Wide Zone earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up Rollout Flood to hit the flood concept once linebackers start creeping up

Best called on early downs or second and medium when defenses are honoring run gaps, and avoid it on obvious passing downs where defenses sit on play-action
