Slants out of Y Off Trips Pistol sends the trips side into a stacked double slant look, with the two inside receivers breaking hard underneath into the middle of the field on quick angle routes while the outside trips receiver runs a corner route to clear space and stretch the deep defender vertically. The backside X runs a deep dig back across the field, giving the quarterback a crossing option away from the trips bunch if the slants get jumped. This is a classic man beater built on quick separation and rub potential from the stacked release, with the primary read progression starting on the inside slant closest to the formation, working to the second slant, then the corner route, and using the backside dig as a late escape valve versus heavy man coverage on the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Watch for man coverage indicators presnap such as corners lined up tight on the trips receivers, that tells you the slants and rub concept will create natural separation. If the defense shows Cover 3 with the corner sitting deep on the trips side, expect the underneath slant to be the primary conflict window since the flat defender has to choose between the slant and the corner route. Key the middle linebacker depth, if he sits shallow expecting a quick game read he can undercut the first slant, so be ready to progress to the second slant or the backside dig. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle zone, this play is vulnerable to a spy or rat defender jumping the crossing dig route on the backside. Cover 2 shells with safeties rotating hard to the trips corner route will bracket that receiver, forcing you to live underneath with the slants and accept the shorter gain.

Usage Tips

Fire this quickly against Cover 1 or Cover 3 press looks since the stacked slants create natural picks that spring defenders open against man coverage.

Presnap, check the depth of the trips side corner and the flow of the second level linebackers, if they are shaded outside expecting the corner route the underneath slant window opens up immediately.

Hot route the outside trips receiver into a shorter option if you see a Cover 2 shell rolling hard to that side, since the corner route can get squeezed by an over the top safety.

Use this play on early downs to set up RPO Alert Slant or Curls out of the same formation, since the pre-snap look is nearly identical and keeps the defense guessing between quick game and RPO reads.

On third and short, prioritize the first slant read and get the ball out on time, this beats blitz packages because the route breaks so quickly that the throw is live before pressure arrives.
