Counter Y out of Pistol Y Off Trips is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside linemen to lead through the hole for the HB, using the trips receivers to hold defenders in space away from the point of attack. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a down block and kick out at the point of attack with the guard and tackle pulling across the formation to lead block, while the HB takes the handoff on a counter step before hitting the designed gap. This is a power run concept designed to attack gap exchange defenses and beats defenses that overcommit to the flow of the initial backfield action, with the primary read being the block of the pulling lead blocker to determine cutback or downhill lane.
Key the play side defensive end and linebacker flow since a hard crash inside opens the cutback lane behind the pulling blockers Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the hole reading counter action rather than following the initial flow, since this can blow up the pulling lead blocker Identify if the defense is running a gap exchange or scrape exchange technique on the edge since this play is designed to counteract that exact adjustment Stacked fronts with extra defenders in the box and disciplined linebackers who stay square to the ball rather than flowing hard will limit the effectiveness of this run Check safety depth pre-snap since a safety sitting close to the line can rotate down quickly to fill the counter lane before the pulling blockers arrive
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the defense is not stacked with an extra run defender before snapping this
Attack base fronts and light boxes since the counter action creates a numbers advantage at the point of attack if the defense sends extra defenders to the trips side
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Slam from the same formation to keep the defense honest on quick hitting runs before hitting them with the slower developing counter action
Mix in PA Counter Y Screen from this set after running Counter Y a few times to punish linebackers who start crashing down hard on the counter action
Best used on early downs or short yardage situations where the defense is more likely to be in a run friendly personnel package rather than nickel or dime coverage
