Breakdown

PA Boot Slide is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Y Off Trips that pulls the QB to the boot side while the backfield fakes an inside handoff. Off the fake, two receivers on the boot side stem vertically upfield to clear space while the slide man works underneath from the backside all the way across the formation, and the trips side releases on a deep comeback to hold the corner. This is a man beater built to exploit overpursuit on the run fake, with the primary read starting on the underneath slide crosser and progressing to the two vertical routes stacked on the boot side as the QB rolls.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are sitting shallow expecting run they will bite on the fake and open the slide route window. Key the flow of the second level defenders after the snap, if they flow hard to the run fake the slide crosser will have a wide open throwing lane. Identify man coverage on the trips side corner before the snap since the comeback route is designed to beat aggressive press or trail technique. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the QB on the boot side, that lurk threat can jump the slide route or force the QB to eat pressure. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep can take away the verticals, forcing the QB to check down early to the slide man underneath.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when the defense has shown run blitz or heavy box looks to sell the play-action fake harder.

Check the slide route first since it crosses the field and creates natural separation against man coverage or overextended zone drops.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep half safeties, hot route one of the boot side verticals into a shorter comeback or hitch to give the QB a quicker answer.

Pair this with Mtn PA Boot Slide or PA Boot RT to give defenders the same run action and rollout picture from a different tag, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.

Sequence it after HB Dive or HB Wide Zone Wk earlier in the drive so the run fake actually freezes linebackers and opens the slide lane.
