Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Y Off Trips Pistol sends four receivers vertically up the field to attack every deep zone landmark at once. The trips side releases two verts and a corner-breaking route while the backside X runs a deep vertical, and the diagram shows the RB checking down into a shallow flat/drag route underneath as a fifth option off play action or protection. This is a classic zone beater built to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 safeties by flooding the deep thirds and the deep half seams, though it also creates one on one shots for man coverage if a corner gets no safety help over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, since that dictates which vertical seam will be open. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: shallow-dropping linebackers in zone will struggle to stay under the inside verts, so a slow linebacker drop is your green light to hit the seam quickly. Beware of a Cover 4 or Cover 6 shell with four defenders reading verticals from depth, since that coverage takes away all four vertical stems and forces you to the RB checkdown. Look for a user-controlled safety cheating toward the trips side pre-snap, which signals they intend to rob the inside seam and leaves the backside X vertical in a favorable one on one matchup. Any disguised blitz with only three deep defenders means someone has to pass off a vertical route, so identify the late-rotating defender and throw opposite of their leverage before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two deep safeties spun to a Cover 2 shell, target the seams between the corner and safety since Four Verts is a certified Cover 2 beater. Against Cover 3 look immediately to the middle seam route since the middle of the field safety has to choose one vertical threat and cannot cover both inside verts. Use your right stick to work the flat route or drag from the RB as a checkdown if the deep routes are covered, especially against a heavy pass rush or delayed blitz. Hot route the backside X into a slant or in-route against man coverage to give yourself a quicker underneath option and combine that adjustment with Slants or Curls from this same set to keep the defense guessing on similar formation looks. Save this play for second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells, and pair it with PA Boot Slide or PA Scissors out of the same personnel to disguise your run action tendencies.
