Lead Swing Dbl Spot is a trips-based spot concept out of Pistol Y Off Trips with 11 personnel. From the trips side, the inside receiver runs a corner route, the middle receiver hits a quick hitch/curl, and the outside receiver runs a deep vertical, while the backside receiver on the numbers runs a corner route as well, creating two vertical stretch reads on the flanks with a hitch settling underneath. The RB swings out to the flat off the pistol alignment, giving the QB a built-in checkdown against underneath defenders who sink into the spot zones. This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the flat swing and hitch to hold the curl-flat defender while the corner and vertical routes stretch the deep third defenders, with the primary read starting at the trips side corner route working down to the hitch and finally the RB swing as the checkdown.

Defensive Reads

Read the deep safeties presnap, two high safeties with off corners signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 which this concept is built to exploit with the dual corner routes. Watch the curl-flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the hitch route the swing to the RB should be wide open in the flat for an easy pickup. Key the outside cornerbacks off the line, if they play soft zone technique they will struggle to get depth on the corner routes stretching behind them. Beware disguised Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks with a linebacker spying the RB, this concept loses its checkdown value against tight man coverage on the swing route. Look for a nickel or slot blitz off the trips side, the hitch route can be a quick answer against pressure but the QB needs to get the ball out fast before the corner routes fully develop.

Usage Tips

Attack Cover 3 shells presnap since the corner routes to both sides are designed to split the deep third defenders and force the flat defender to choose between the hitch and the swing.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the swing to the RB and the underneath hitch give you a high floor conversion option if the corners are covered.

Hot route the backside corner route into a deep out if you see a hard trips shift from the defense, this keeps the flat defender honest without giving up the man beater element of the concept.
