Lead Swing Dbl Spot is a trips-based Spot concept pass play out of Pistol Y Off Trips. The two outside receivers to the trips side run vertical routes that clear out the deep coverage, the slot receiver runs a corner route (red route) that settles into the vacated flat/corner area, and the backside receiver runs a comeback breaking back to the sideline. The running back releases on a swing route out of the backfield to the trips side, giving the quarterback a built-in checkdown against blitz. This is a classic Cover 3 beater designed to attack the flat and hole defender with the corner route while the verticals hold the deep thirds, with the primary read progression going corner route to swing to comeback.
Defensive Reads
Identify the middle of field safety alignment pre-snap: a single high safety usually signals Cover 3, which is exactly what this concept is built to beat. Watch the flat defender post-snap since he has to choose between the swing route and the corner route, and either choice opens up the other read. Key the corner or hole defender's drop depth: if he sinks too deep on the corner route, the swing route to the RB is wide open underneath. Man coverage with press corners on the backside can jump the comeback route, so be ready to hot route that receiver into a quicker breaking route. Watch for blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge, since the swing route becomes your outlet valve when the pocket collapses quickly.
Usage Tips
Attack Cover 3 shells first since the corner route sits right in the hole defender's zone and forces a conflict read for that defender.
Check the flat defender pre-snap: if a linebacker or nickel is sitting low in the flat, the swing route to the RB becomes an easy answer against man or zone pressure.
Use hot routes to convert the backside comeback into a hitch or slant if the defense shows a hard press-man look on that single receiver.
Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Slam in your play calling sequence to keep the box honest, then dial up Lead Swing Dbl Spot on second or third and medium once the defense starts creeping linebackers.
Best run on second or third and short to medium distances where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells rather than blitz aggressively.
