Return HB Power is a Pistol run play out of the Y Off Trips set with a motion tag that returns a trips receiver back across the formation before the snap, shifting the numbers advantage into the box. The blocking scheme pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block for the HB, who takes a downhill path off the pistol alignment behind a fullback-style lead blocker path shown in the diagram. This is a gap scheme power run designed to overload one side of the line, and the primary read progression starts with the pulling guard's kick or wrap block, hitting the hole tight to the double team at the point of attack before bouncing outside if the alley is sealed.
Watch the linebacker flow at the snap: if they overpursue toward the pulling guard's path, cut the play back against the grain for a big gain. Identify one high safety versus two high safety shells before the snap, since a single high safety often means the box is loaded and this power run will face quicker fills. Key the defensive end and outside linebacker on the play side edge, as a crashing edge defender can blow up the pulling guard's kick out block. Man coverage on the motion receiver signals a defender is being pulled out of the box, creating a favorable numbers count for the power concept. A hard blitz call with linebackers stacked tight to the line pre-snap is the biggest threat to this play, since it can beat the guard's pull before he reaches the point of attack.
Use the return motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or safety with the motion man, which tells you if you are facing man or zone principles.
Call this on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defensive fronts are showing base personnel without extra run support in the box.
If the defense stacks the box after the motion, check to a quick game pass or hot route the returning receiver into a bubble or quick out to punish the overcommitted defense.
Pair this play with HB Slam and HB Dive from the same set to keep the defense honest on interior gap runs while disguising the pulling guard action.
Sequence this with Counter GT Alert Smoke later in the series since both plays share similar backfield action but attack opposite gaps, forcing linebackers to hesitate on flow reads.
