Posts Y Wheel is a trips concept out of Pistol that pairs dual post routes from the outside receivers with a Y wheel route from the tight end working out of the backfield alignment area to attack the flat and sideline vertically. It is primarily a man beater, since the wheel route is designed to shake linebackers or slower coverage defenders who try to stay attached to the TE on what looks like a flare or check release. The primary progression is posts first, working from the boundary post to the trips post read, then working to the Y wheel late as a man beater outlet or big play shot if a linebacker or safety bites on the underneath action.

Defensive Reads

Identify two high safeties before the snap since this tells you the post routes will have help over the top and you should prioritize the wheel route as your primary answer. Watch the linebacker or slot corner assigned to the Y in man coverage, if he sinks with depth instead of sprinting to match the wheel release you have an uncontested throw down the sideline. Cover 3 with a hard flat defender can undercut the Y wheel route, so read the flat defender's leverage before committing to that throw. Match up nickel or dime packages that show blitz off the edge, since the wheel route naturally clears out and gives your quarterback an outlet away from pressure. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells that keep corners deep over the posts and use a robber underneath, this combination takes away both levels of the concept and should push you toward the checkdown or scramble drill.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage looking to jump quick game.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap. Two high shells with corners playing outside leverage on the posts open up the middle of the field for your posts to sit down against zone.

If you see man coverage with a linebacker or slot defender matched on the Y, the wheel route is your home run shot since most defenders cannot stay on top of a TE breaking to the sideline vertically.

Hot route the underneath post to a dig or sit route against zone if the safeties are clogging the middle, and consider motioning the Y before the snap to get a pre-snap read on man versus zone.

Pair this with RPO Alert Slant or RPO Glance Post earlier in a drive to condition the defense to expect quick game, then hit them with the wheel route shot off the same trips look for an explosive gain.
