RPO Glance Post is a run pass option out of Pistol Y Off Trips that pairs an inside zone run with a glance route (slot slant) and a post shot from the trips side. The zone blocking scheme holds the box count while the quarterback reads the second level defender, usually a linebacker or nickel, to decide between handing off or pulling and throwing. This play is a zone beater and man beater depending on the leverage of that alert defender, and the primary read progression is box count first, then the flow of the read defender into the glance window before checking the post as a big play window against soft coverage or blown assignments.

Defensive Reads

Watch the second level defender closest to the trips side presnap, since his depth and leverage tell you whether he is a run fit player or the glance defender in coverage. Post snap, key his first two steps: if he crashes downhill on run flow, pull and throw the glance immediately behind him. Against Cover 3 or single high shells, the flat to curl defender often has to choose between the glance and a wheel or seam threat, so attack the space he vacates. Man coverage with no help over the slot is the green light for the post shot, since the trips alignment creates natural rub potential against the glance defender. Watch for user linebackers spying the quarterback's eyes or sitting the RPO read, since a disciplined user defender can bait the throw and jump the glance route for a turnover.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, lean toward throwing the glance immediately instead of testing the run fit.

Identify single high versus two high shells presnap because single high defenses tend to leave the glance window wide open while two high shells force you to trust the run more often.

Use the post as your home run alert against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the underneath defender bites hard on the glance, since the safety rotation often lags behind the post release.

Sequence this play behind HB Wide Zone Wk or Wide Zone earlier in the drive so linebackers start cheating downhill, which opens up the glance read even more on this RPO.

Save this call for run and pass balanced downs like second and medium or first and ten, since predictable run downs invite extra defenders into the box and take away the RPO advantage.
