HB Zone out of Pistol Y Off Trips is a pure inside zone run with the trips receiver look to the same side used as window dressing to pull safeties out of the box. The offensive line executes zone blocking steps, working double teams at the point of attack before climbing to the second level, while the HB reads his blocking scheme flow, from the play side gap out to the backside cutback lane. This is a run play with no pass option attached, so the primary read progression is entirely for the ball carrier: press the initial hole, read the first covered blocker, and decide between the bend, bang, or bounce lane based on how the front reacts.

Defensive Reads

Look at the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties stay high in a two high shell the box is light and this run hits quickly, but if one rotates down into the box you are facing a run blitz look. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, linebackers sitting shallow and square are reading run and will fill fast, while linebackers backpedaling or shuffling laterally signal zone coverage drops that leave the box vacant. Man beater blitz packages with a Mike linebacker showing blitz pre-snap can be a problem since a well timed A gap shoot blitz can blow up zone blocking before double teams set, so check protection or motion to identify it. Nano blitzes disguised inside stack fronts will demand you replace the block manually with your fullback or HB awareness on the backside guard, otherwise the run dies before the mesh point. Defenses in a 46 or heavy 4-3 under front with the strong safety cheating into the box are the toughest matchup for HB Zone, while nickel and dime packages with light personnel are where this run consistently gashes for extra yardage.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes of six or fewer defenders since trips to one side often pulls a safety or nickel out wide, creating a numbers advantage on the backside. Use the left or right stick to manually place your HB behind the play side guard at the snap, then trust your zone blocking and let the hole develop instead of forcing it. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Split Dive from the same set so defenders cannot sit on zone flow, then mix in Play Action Boot RT or PA Boot Slide off the same personnel to punish linebackers who start crashing downhill. Against defenses that load the box with eight or nine defenders, check to RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Glance Post from this same set instead of running into a stacked front. Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, where defenses are still respecting balance and have not fully committed to run support.
