Mtn PA Boot RT is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Y Off Trips that fakes a mountain (mtn) run action before the QB rolls right on a boot. The diagram shows the trips side receivers running a deep out and a corner/flag route to clear the perimeter, while the backside X runs a deep crosser toward the sideline underneath those routes, and the fullback or attached back releases into the flat as the boot's checkdown. The blocking scheme pulls extra bodies to the right to sell the run fake and protect the rollout edge. This is a play-action man beater at heart, with the primary read progression starting on the flat route in front of the QB, then working to the deep crossing route, and finally the trips corner or out route if the pocket holds up on the rollout.
Read the flat defender first since he determines whether the checkdown route is open or if he is sitting to jump it, which tells you whether to move to your second read immediately. Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap: if they bite hard on the mtn run fake, the deep crosser will have a clean throwing lane behind them for a big gain. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since single high with man coverage on the trips receivers sets up the corner route as a big-play man beater, while two high shells favor sitting the deep crosser underneath the safety. Watch the backside edge defender on the boot side for contain discipline, since a defender who stays home and doesn't chase the run fake can blow up the rollout and force an early, inaccurate throw. Look for user-controlled defenders lurking in the shallow crosser's lane, since a smart user player will sit on that route and jump the throw if the QB stares it down too long.
Call this on early downs like first or second and short-to-medium yardage when defenses expect run or standard play-action, since the mtn fake sells hardest against teams keying the run gap. Pre-snap, check the safety alignment: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the deep crosser has room to work behind linebackers, but if it is single high with the strong safety cheating toward the trips side, expect man coverage and prioritize the flat route or the corner route on the boot. Hot route the backside X into a shallow drag if you are getting quick pressure off the edge, since the naked boot action is vulnerable to unblocked edge defenders reading the QB run keys. Pair this with Mtn HB Wide Zone Wk or HB Wide Zone Wk earlier in a series so the defense starts biting on the mtn run fake, then hit them with this boot concept once linebackers start flowing hard downhill. Use play-action rollouts like this sparingly against aggressive user blitzers who spy the QB, since a contained rollout with no outlet can get you sacked or forced to throw it away.
