Shotgun Trey Open is the widest of the Trey family, splitting the three receiver surface so the outside X is isolated on the backside while the tight end and slot stack the strong side of the field. Personnel is 11 (1 RB 1 TE), but the TE aligns as a detached number two or number three rather than inline, which means you are effectively running a three by one or bunch-adjacent look without sacrificing the run blocking calls. Compared to Trey (tight) or Trey Flex, the open alignment widens the splits and pushes the play side receivers off the numbers, stretching flat zone defenders and creating natural throwing windows between the hook and curl droppers.
Read the leverage of the defender over the detached TE pre-snap: inside shade means Y Corner, Hitch Y Corner or Y-Sail Go, outside shade means Stick, Y Stick HB Angle or Air Raid Stick.
Against single high man, lean on Clearout Pick Return, GL Rub Under and Mesh Rewind, and hot route the isolated X to a fade or slant so you always have a one on one to bail out the concept.
Versus Cover 3 and Cover 6 on third and medium, Curls Combo and Spacing HB Wheel put four receivers in the 8 to 14 yard window, and blocking the back gives you protection while you work the curl to flat defender.
Set your RB in pass block or run RPO Alert Draw Stick and RPO Q Stick Draw when the opponent shows a five man front or cheats a safety down, and pull the Stick throw the moment the linebacker triggers on the draw.
When the user starts sitting in the mesh lanes, switch to Dig N Go, Sluggo Seam or Stick N Nod out of the same look so the pre-snap picture stays identical and the double move punishes the jump.
