The inside receiver runs a drive route crossing underneath while the outside receiver from the trips side pushes vertical up the seam, and the backside single receiver runs a straight go route up the boundary. The TE releases into a shallow drag underneath while the drive route sits behind it, giving the QB a layered read from the shallow drag to the drive route crossing the middle. Primary progression starts with the shallow drag underneath, works to the drive route crossing over the middle, then bails outside to the seam or go route if the underneath windows are covered.

Defensive Reads

Watch for two high safeties pre snap since this concept is built to attack Cover 4 by overloading the intermediate crossing lanes where quarters defenders have to make tough zone hand off decisions. If the defense shows man coverage with a single high safety, look for the drive route to pick off the underneath defender, this is a classic man beater against Cover 1 and Cover 3 man variations. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender at the snap, if he sinks deep to cover the drive route crossing behind him, the shallow drag underneath will be wide open for an easy pitch and catch. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 6 shells where the flat defender can sit on the shallow drag and the safety can rob the drive route, this combination clogs both underneath reads and forces you to the outside go route. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the middle of the field or a nickel blitz off the slot, since the drive route crosses right through the vacated underneath zone and can get picked off if the user jumps the route early.

Usage Tips

Use this out of Trey Open when you see Cover 4 or quarters shells since the crossing drive route stretches the underneath zone defenders horizontally and creates natural picks against man coverage.

Check the flat defender and the middle linebacker depth pre snap, if the linebacker is sitting shallow the drag route underneath will be your first target for an easy checkdown that keeps the chains moving.

Hot route the backside go route into a comeback or hitch against soft press corners if you are getting single high safety looks, this turns a low percentage vertical shot into a quick rhythm throw.

Pair this play with Curls or Double Ins from the same set so the defense has to respect both the drive concept underneath and the deeper curl breakpoints, keeping linebackers and safeties honest.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the drive route and drag give you multiple underneath completion options if the defense drops into zone.
