Slot Drive from Shotgun Trey Open (11 personnel) shows a five man route concept with a deep vertical from the top X, a corner route breaking outside from the number two receiver in the trey bunch, and a drive concept underneath from the slot where the near inside receiver runs a deep in cutting across the field while the frontside TE releases outside then works back flat. The lone backside receiver runs a deep crossing route from left to right that clears underneath and stretches zone defenders horizontally. This is a Cover 4 beater built to attack the seams and hole zones with the drive route sitting down in the void created by the vertical stems, so the primary read starts with the vertical from the trey side, works down to the crossing drive route as the first real answer against off coverage, and finishes with the flat/check option if the middle is jammed.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a robber or lurking linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, since the drive route crossing underneath is the first thing a user defender will jump if he reads your eyes. Identify Cover 3 sky or buzz looks where the safety rotates down into the drive route's landing zone, which forces you to hold the ball and check the flat or vertical. Man coverage with a linebacker or nickel matched on the drive route defender is vulnerable, since the route's depth and angle create natural separation against man leverage. Blitz-heavy fronts with man coverage behind them are dangerous here because the drive route takes time to develop, so know your hot route adjustments before the snap if you see extra rushers walked up. Against Cover 4, key the flat defender and curl/hook defender: if they widen with the vertical stem, the drive route sits wide open in the vacated middle zone.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or second and medium when you want to test if the defense is playing quarters coverage since the drive route sits perfectly in the honey hole against Cover 4 shells.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are deep and the corners are aligned outside with cushion, expect Cover 4 or Cover 2 and prioritize the crossing drive route over the top of the underneath defenders.
Hot route the frontside TE into a quick flat or option route if you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on him, since the drive route can get picked off by an underneath robber in man schemes.
Pair this with Curls or Y Stick HB Angle from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a quick underneath answer and a deeper crossing shot, forcing linebackers to widen their drops.
Best used on first or second down to keep the defense honest before dialing up Four Verticals or Jets Deep Post later in the drive once the crossing route has drawn safety attention underneath.
