Under Y Out is a route concept out of Shotgun Trey Open that puts the Y (tight end) on an out breaking route while the Trey bunch on the strong side occupies underneath zones and man defenders with crossing traffic. The backside receiver typically runs a dig or in route to give the quarterback a two level read against zone, while the out route from the Y is the primary man beater against linebackers and slower nickel defenders working the boundary. This is a quick game passing concept designed to get the ball out on time, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary progression starts with the Y out before working to the backside dig or checking down underneath.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first, whether it is a linebacker or nickel corner, since his depth and width tell you if the out route window is open. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, the corner sitting hard on the flat can jump the out route, so be ready to look off and work to the backside dig instead. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking underneath the Trey bunch, since a smart user player will sit on the out route and bait the throw. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the Y is the ideal matchup, especially against slower linebackers who cannot flip and run with the out cut. Blitz heavy fronts with man coverage behind them can be deadly if the out route is jumped early, so check the mike linebacker depth pre-snap and be ready to check the ball down if he is sitting in the throwing lane.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to third and medium when you need a quick, high percentage completion against man or zone coverage. Pre-snap, check if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 with the corner sitting outside, since the out route from the Y will settle into the void underneath those deep zones. If you see man coverage on the Y with a linebacker matched up, trust the out route and throw with anticipation before the break to beat the defender out of the cut. Hot route the backside receiver into a speed out or comeback if the defense rotates extra help to the Trey side, giving you a quick answer to blitz pressure. Pair this play with Y Cross or Y Stick HB Angle in your call sheet so the defense has to respect both the horizontal out concept and vertical crossing routes, keeping linebackers honest and opening throwing lanes on both calls.
