Defensive Reads

Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat, this lurk threat can jump the HB option route and bait a pick six if thrown late. Identify Cover 2 shells by looking for two deep safeties split evenly, this coverage takes away the seam and corner routes but leaves the HB option and short hitch open underneath. Man coverage with no help over the top is when this play hits hardest, since the option route creates natural separation against a defender playing outside leverage.

Usage Tips

Use the HB option route as your built in hot read against any pressure look, especially when you see linebackers creeping toward the line pre-snap.

Motion or shift the trey side receivers pre-snap to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on how the defenders adjust their alignment.

Take the deep X seam shot when the safety over the top rotates toward the trey side, leaving the backside one on one with no help.

Pair this play with Curls or Quick Slants from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and the option route concept.

Best used on early downs or third and short since the HB option gives a safe checkdown while still threatening deep shots on the trey side.
