Speed Option out of Shotgun Trey Open is a true option run play that sends the QB toward the edge with the HB pitching option in tow, reading the play side defensive end or force defender on the fly. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack while the QB and HB run the option path together outside the tackle box, keeping the read simple: give if the option key crashes down on the QB, keep if he sits or widens to take away the pitch. This is a pure run concept designed to attack fast flow and aggressive edge defenders rather than a coverage shell.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker immediately after the snap, their leverage tells the QB whether to pitch or keep. Watch for defenders assigned to force the option, if the defense uses a designated scrape exchange linebacker this play can get shut down quickly. Look at the safety rotation pre-snap, if a safety is cheating down into the box as an extra run defender the pitch lane gets crowded and the keep read becomes safer. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the QB or crashing down hard off the edge, since fast, disciplined edge defenders who stay square can blow this play up before the mesh point develops. Against overloaded fronts or heavy blitz packages sent to the play side, expect the option key to be replaced by extra rushers, forcing a quicker, earlier pitch read.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs when you have a mobile QB who can actually threaten the edge and make defenders respect the pull.

Check the alignment of the play side defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing hard on run downs this play punishes that aggression.

Combine Speed Option with RPO Alert Draw Stick or Read Option from the same set so the defense cannot sit on one option look and has to respect both the mesh and edge threats.

Mix in Read Option and Power Read on similar downs and distances to keep linebackers guessing between inside and outside option reads.

Pitch the ball earlier against fast flow defenses and pull it against teams that stay disciplined and let the QB run, since the option key usually tips his intentions with his first two steps.
