HB Base out of Shotgun Trey Open is a straightforward dive run with the HB aligned offset in the backfield and the run tag directing him through the interior gap. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down at the point of attack while the three receivers to the trips side and the single receiver on the backside stay uninvolved as decoys, keeping the defense honest with the pass-heavy personnel look. This is a run play designed to attack the interior, with the primary read being the initial gap based on the defensive front, then bouncing outside if the line gets blown off the ball.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense has stacked the box with a extra linebacker or safety cheating down, since that signals a run blitz designed to beat this exact dive concept. Look for the defensive tackles shading toward the play side gap. A slanting front can blow up the initial dive lane and force a cutback read. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow and flowing hard downhill will close the dive lane quickly, so be ready to bounce outside. This play struggles against inside zone blitzes and A-gap pressure packages since the blocking scheme is built for gap integrity rather than combo blocks. It performs well against light boxes out of nickel or dime defense, especially if the defense respects the trips receivers and plays two high safeties.
Call this out of Trey Open to disguise the run since the trips alignment often forces defenses into pass-friendly nickel or dime personnel that struggles versus interior dive concepts.
Check the box count before the snap. If you see six or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a play-action or RPO from this same set instead.
Use the left stick to press the hole shown on the diagram first, then read the flow of the linebackers to decide whether to cut back or bounce it outside.
Pair this play with RPO Alert Draw Stick or RPO Q Stick Draw from the same formation so the defense has to respect both the dive action and the pass options off similar backfield action.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the chains and keep defenses guessing between run and the trips pass concepts in this set.
