The primary read is simple: get the ball to the HB immediately after the crossing action clears, then trust your blockers to spring him into open grass rather than progressing through any wide receiver route.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defenders who diagnose the screen immediately and sit at the line of scrimmage rather than rushing the passer, since this kills the play before blockers can set the wall. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2 with linebackers dropping into shallow zones are the toughest matchup since those defenders can read the QB eyes and drift toward the screen action. Man coverage with no underneath help is exploitable since defenders will be locked onto receivers and slow to react to the HB leaking out.
