PA Read out of Shotgun Trey Open runs a play-action fake to the backfield before working a three level pattern to the trips side. The X receiver from the backfield alignment breaks outward on a deep out, the slot runs a deep crossing route toward the same sideline, and the inline tag runs an out from the middle of the formation while the single receiver to the closed side runs a deep comeback or hitch off the play fake. The primary progression starts with the crossing route working across the middle, then bounces to the deep out on the sideline, and finally to the boundary receiver if the safety bites on the run action. This is a play-action combo that stresses zone defenders horizontally while also giving a man beater against man coverage if the crosser clears the linebackers.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle linebacker at the snap, if he steps up on the run fake instead of sinking with the crosser you have an easy completion working across the field. Watch the flat or curl to flat defender on the trips side, if he sits on the deep out route without respecting the crosser underneath, look to the sideline for the throw. Identify two high safeties pre-snap, cover 2 or cover 4 shells will make the deep comeback to the single side a low value read since the corner has help. Man coverage with a single high safety is the most vulnerable shell against this concept because the crossing route can create natural separation against man defenders trailing across the field. Watch for a blitz off the edge to the strong side, since the play action mesh point can be exploited by a fast exterior blitz if the offensive line is not set to slide protect.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs, first and second and short to medium, when defenses are more willing to bite on the run fake.

Check the defense pre-snap for two deep safeties versus single high, if you see single high the crossing route has a great chance to work versus man coverage underneath.

If you diagnose zone coverage, hot route the deep out to sit down a few yards shorter to hit the void behind linebackers before the flat defender can react.

Pair this play with HB Off Tackle or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake and linebackers step up, opening the crosser and deep out.

Combine with Curls or Y Cross Wheel on the following play call to keep the defense guessing between quick game and shot plays off similar action.
