QB Zone out of Shotgun Trey Open is a designed QB run that uses an inside zone blocking scheme up front, with the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side while the QB reads the natural cutback lanes created by the blocking track. The lone RB stays in to help seal the edge or leak out as a checkdown, while the three receivers to the trips side run off their defenders to clear the box for the QB run lane. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap integrity, with the primary read being the QB reading the flow of the defensive line and picking his gap based on where the zone blocking creates the widest running lane.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the defensive line crashing hard toward the play side flow, which signals a scrape exchange or contain defender ready to squeeze the QB. If the Mike linebacker stays square and doesn't bite on the zone flow, that is a sign the defense is playing disciplined gap control and this run will get shut down quickly. User-controlled defenders spying the QB or sitting in the alley are the biggest threat, since this play lives on the QB getting a clean read without a spy waiting to jump the cutback lane. Overloaded fronts or heavy blitz packages with extra defenders crashing downhill can blow up the zone blocking before the QB even reaches the mesh point. Check safety depth pre-snap, since a single high safety often means an extra body in the box, while two deep safeties usually indicate a lighter front that this run play can exploit.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Look for linebackers cheating toward the trips side pre-snap since that often opens up a bigger cutback lane away from the flow.
Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base personnel instead of loading up with extra DBs.
Pair QB Zone with HB Draw and Read Option from this same set so defenders keying run fits get punished for guessing wrong on the mesh point.
If the defense starts selling out to stop the QB run, sequence into RPO Alert Draw Stick or PA Read to make linebackers hesitate and widen the cutback lane.
