The motion man releases on a swing/flat route while the outside receiver on that side digs across the field underneath, and on the trips side one receiver runs a corner route while the other stems vertical before breaking back to the sideline, crossing paths with the corner route to create natural rub traffic. This is a man beater built to exploit the crossing action and pick, with the primary read starting on the shallow crosser working from the backfield motion man, then progressing to the corner and comeback combo on the trips side if the underneath routes are taken away.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a defender chasing the jet motion man pre-snap, that confirms man coverage and tells you the shallow crosser and swing route will have room to work. If the linebackers stay disciplined and shuffle with the crosser rather than biting on the motion, you are likely seeing a zone shell and should progress to the trips side combo route. Look for a corner sitting deep outside the trips side, if he stays high and lets the corner route stack behind the comeback you have a soft spot underneath for the shallow crosser to settle into. Nano blitzes off the edge can disrupt the timing of the corner route on the trips side, so identify pre-snap if the defense is showing extra rushers near the line and be ready to get the ball out on the crosser early. A user controlled lurk defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane is the biggest threat to this concept, if you see a defender sitting still near the middle of the field post-snap, look immediately to the trips side corner and comeback instead.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to force the defense to declare man or zone, if a defender follows the motion man across the formation you know you are getting man coverage and can attack with the shallow crosser immediately.

Against zone shells, hold the ball a beat longer and let the corner and comeback combo on the trips side develop since the rub concept will create natural separation against zone drops.

This play pairs well with Y Cross or Mesh in the same set since both stress the same shallow crossing window, allowing you to keep defenders guessing on which crosser is the actual first read.

Best called on early downs or in third and short to medium situations where the shallow crosser can pick up the sticks quickly without needing a huge developing route.

If the defense shows blitz pre-snap, hot route the shallow crosser to sit down quickly as a checkdown valve since the crossing route naturally beats man pressure off the snap.
