Breakdown

Stick N Nod is a quick-hitting man beater out of the Trey Open bunch look in Shotgun 11 personnel. The three receivers to the trips side run the classic Stick concept, with the outside receiver clearing vertically, the middle receiver settling on a nod/stick route around five yards, and the flat runner working underneath to the sideline as a built-in hot route against blitz. The backside X runs a straight vertical to hold the single high safety and stretch the field, while the red route (either your TE or slot option) works a quick option/settle route in the middle of the field as the initial look versus zone drops. Primary progression starts with the middle nod/settle route against man coverage leakage, then works to the flat route as the blitz-beater outlet, and finally to the backside vertical if the defense rotates away.

Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker depth pre-snap, since a shallow drop signals he is keying the nod route and will jump it on the snap. Identify single high versus two deep safeties before the snap, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the stick and nod window open longer than Cover 2 or Cover 4. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he sinks with the nod route the flat route opens instantly for an easy checkdown. Man coverage with underneath help defenders sitting in passing lanes can bait you into a pick six on the nod route, so double check for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow middle. Heavy blitz packages with only two deep defenders create a race between your flat route getting open and the pass rush arriving, so have your outlet ready before the snap if you see extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a look at the flat defender to identify if you are facing man or zone before the snap, since Stick concepts thrive against off-man and zone alike.

If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with squatting corners, target the nod/settle route sitting in the soft spot underneath the deep zones.

Against Cover 2 or man coverage with underneath help, work the flat route quickly to beat any blitz look since it is your built-in answer against pressure.

Pair this play with Y Stick HB Angle or Air Raid Stick in your call sheet so the defense cannot sit on the same stick concept read every snap.

Best used on third and short to third and medium since the stick and flat combo gives you multiple easy completions underneath the sticks.

Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle read zone, since that defender can jump the nod route if you stare it down too long.
