Verts X Drag out of Shotgun Trey Open sends three vertical routes up the field from the Trey side while the backside X runs a drag underneath and the running back releases out of the backfield on a flat route to the opposite side. This is a classic four verticals shell with a drag conversion, built to attack both zone and man coverage by stretching the field vertically while giving the quarterback a horizontal answer against pressure or a jumped route. The primary read progression starts with the vertical seams on the Trey side, working outside in, then resets to the drag as the underneath check down if the safeties rotate over the top or the middle of the field gets clogged.
Pre-snap, identify the free safety depth and alignment, if he is shaded to the Trey side the drag route becomes the higher value read since the deep middle will be occupied. Watch for two high safeties rotating late into a single high shell after the snap, this signals Cover 3 and the middle seam is the priority throw. If the corners bail immediately into deep zone drops without pressing at the line, you are likely facing zone coverage and the verticals will have room to sit down or break at the top of their stem. Key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks hard to cover the drag or spies the quarterback, the deep verticals become the better option since the underneath window closes. Watch for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing area, since the drag route is the most vulnerable to a jumped throw if the defense sits a linebacker or nickel corner in that zone.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait the safeties and confirm if you are facing Cover 2 or Cover 3 before the snap, since this play is labeled as a beater for both shells.
Against Cover 3, target the deep middle seam route since the free safety has to choose between the two inside verticals, creating a natural void.
Against Cover 2, the two outside verticals on the Trey side will occupy the corners while the safeties get pulled deep, opening the drag route as a chunk gain underneath.
Call this on early downs in the medium to deep range game plan, then follow it up with Curls or Y Stick HB Angle to punish defenses sitting on the verticals with underneath coverage.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, hot route the drag into a quicker breaking route or check to the running back's flat release as your outlet against pressure.
