Y-Sail Go runs out of Shotgun Trey Open with three receivers bunched to the trips side and a single receiver backside. Backside X and the trips side outermost WR both fly vertical on go routes to stretch the deep coverage, while the Y (TE) runs the sail route out to the flat as the underneath sail element, with the inside slot receiver running a corner breaking route underneath the go and above the sail to fill the intermediate window. The HB stays in as a checkdown option out of the backfield. This is a zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by stacking three levels on one side, and the primary read progression starts high to low: go route first for a shot play, then the corner route in the middle window, then settle into the sail flat route against squatting corners.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side, two deep safeties split evenly signals Cover 2 and the flat defender becomes the key post-snap read. If the corner over the trips side is playing a hard outside shade with no help behind him, expect Cover 3 and look for the go route to win over the top against a single high safety. Post-snap, watch the flat or curl to flat defender, if he sinks with the sail route the corner route sitting down behind him is open, if he jumps the sail route the flat is wide open underneath. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone can jump the corner route, so track the user before committing to that throw. This concept struggles against a hard Cover 4 or quarters shell with press corners since it removes the vertical shot and forces the QB into the sail flat as the only true answer, and it is vulnerable to disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers off the edge before the deep routes fully develop.
Use this play on 2nd or 3rd and medium to long when defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 or Cover 3 shells rather than blitz. Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the trips side is playing off or bailing into a deep third, that tells you the go route has a chance to win one on one. If the safety cheats over the top of the trips side, hot route the backside X go route into a hitch or comeback to give your QB a quicker, safer outlet. Pair this play with Curls or Y Stick HB Angle from the same set so the defense has to respect both the vertical stretch and the quick game, keeping linebackers and safeties honest on run fits and short zones. Against Cover 2 specifically, trust the sail flat route to hold the corner low while the corner route from the slot settles into the vacated void behind the flat defender and in front of the deep safety.
