Breakdown

Clearout is a play action pass out of Shotgun Trey Open that uses a flood concept to the trips side while isolating the backside receiver on a go route. From the trips side, the outside receiver runs a corner route, the middle receiver clears out vertically to a seam, and the inside slot receiver settles underneath on a curl, while the tight end releases to the flat. The backside X runs a clearout go route to remove the corner from the boundary, and the running back swings out of play action protection for a checkdown. Read the flood side high to low starting with the corner route against Cover 3 or Cover 2, and use the curl or flat as your answer against pressure or man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Look for two deep safeties before the snap since Cover 2 leaves the flood side vulnerable between the corner route and the curl sitting underneath it. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the tight end that opens a throwing lane for the curl route behind him. Identify if the defense shows man coverage by checking for a linebacker walked out on the running back, since the swing route becomes an easy completion against man if the linebacker is late to react. Key the backside cornerback's depth, a single high safety look with no help over the top means the clearout go route on the backside can win one on one against most man corners. Beware of Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells with a hard corner blitz off the edge, since the play action fake can hold the edge defender just long enough but a fast contain rusher can disrupt the timing before the flood routes develop.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rotate late this play attacks the seams created by Cover 2 rotation on the corner and curl combo.

Use the backside go route as a hot read against man coverage since it isolates a single defender with no help over the top if the safety cheats to the trips side.

This is a great call on second and long or third and medium because the flood concept gives you three high low options if the corner blitzes or drops a safety into the box.

Pair Clearout with Curls or Double Ins from the same set so the defense sees similar receiver distribution and cannot jump the flood route combination based on formation tells.

Hot route the flat route to a shallow drag if you are facing heavy underneath zone coverage that sits on the curl and takes away your first read.
