Breakdown

Power Read is a run play out of Shotgun Trey Open that puts the QB in the mesh point read against the play side defensive end. The line blocks down with power scheme while the H-back or FB pulls to lead through the hole, and the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to decide between handing off to the HB or keeping it himself. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the traditional passing sense, and the primary read progression is the play side EDGE defender: crash inside means QB pulls and attacks the perimeter, stay wide or squeeze the QB means the HB gets the ball on the power path behind the puller.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap alignment, a wide 9 technique invites the keep read while a tight 5 technique invites the give. Man defenders that crash hard on run fakes without honoring the QB keep are the biggest liability against this play, so if you see undisciplined edge play call this immediately. Stacked fronts with an extra hat in the box or an overhang defender sitting on the mesh point can blow this play up before the read develops, so avoid this against heavy run blitz packages. On defense, assign your best athletic defender to play the read technique correctly, staying square and forcing the QB to make a decision rather than crashing blindly. Zone coverages with linebackers reading run first tend to fill gaps fast, so if you see two deep safeties with linebackers keying the backfield, expect quick pursuit to the point of attack.

Usage Tips

Check the box count pre-snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box since the read element only nullifies one defender.

Use this on early downs like first and second and ten to keep defenses honest and set up your play-action shots later in the drive.

If the defense shows a hard crash from the DE every snap on film, start pulling the ball yourself immediately after the mesh point instead of hesitating.

Pair this with PA Read or HB Draw from the same personnel look so the defense cannot sit on the run key without opening themselves up to a play-action shot.

Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill at the mesh point, keep the ball more often since their pursuit angle usually overcommits to the HB.
