Breakdown

Power Read is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Trey Open with 11 personnel, built around a power blocking scheme up front and a true QB read on the edge defender. The diagram shows the offensive line pulling and sealing gaps to the strong side while the RB and QB mesh in the backfield, with the RB path angling toward the point of attack behind the pullers. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so it beats aggressive downhill defenses and light boxes where the offense has a numbers advantage. The primary read is the play side defensive end: hand it off if he crashes down on the RB, or pull it and attack the edge with the QB if he stays home or squeezes the mesh point.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end or edge defender pre-snap, since his depth and gap alignment tells you whether he is reading run through or squeezing hard to take away the QB pull. Man coverage with tight press corners on the Trey side often leaves extra numbers in the box, so check if a linebacker or slot defender is walked down as a spy or extra run fitter. Zone shells with two deep safeties tend to slow play read option keys, so look for a safety cheating down into the box as the run alert. Post-snap, key any user-controlled linebacker flowing hard to the mesh point, since that is the lurk defender most likely to blow up both the handoff and the QB keep. If the defense shows an overload blitz to the play side with a linebacker crashing the same gap as your puller, this concept can get blown up before the read even develops, so have a hot route or audible ready.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run Power Read into light boxes of six defenders or fewer since heavier fronts clog the pulling lanes. Identify if the defense is showing a 4-3 under or 3-4 look, since the unblocked read defender is usually the edge player closest to the Trey side. Use your pre-snap motion or a hot route on the backside receiver to hold a robber safety and prevent quick flow to the play side. On third and short or first and ten, pair this with Inside Zone from the same set to keep linebackers honest on run fits before dialing up Power Read as the wrinkle. Sequence this with Read Option or Speed Option later in the drive since defenders who key the mesh point on Power Read will over pursue and open up the outside on those calls.
