Defensive Reads

Key the underneath linebackers and nickel defender on the trips side, if they sink into zone drops the drag route becomes the easy completion. Beware of blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge to the trips side, since the drag route's blocker may not account for an overload rush. Against man coverage with a single high safety, this play wins consistently because the corner route stretches the boundary defender with no help behind him.

Usage Tips

Look to the boundary corner route first if you see man coverage or a corner playing outside leverage, since the trips side numbers advantage opens up the sideline throw.

Use this on second and long or third and medium when you need a explosive gain and the defense is selling out on shorter routes.

If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, work the drag route underneath since the corner route will get squeezed by a deep half defender.

Pair this play with Curls or Y Cross from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter concepts before hitting them with the corner shot.

Motion is not shown here but consider using a hot route to convert the drag into a deeper crosser if you are facing heavy underneath zone coverage.
