Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, because a shallow drop or blitz look tells you the mesh window will be tight and you should speed up your read to the seam sit. Key the deep safety rotation after the snap, since a single high safety staying home signals man coverage and opens up the backside comeback route. Look for a user lurk defender sitting in the mesh crossing lanes, as that indicates a defense that has scouted the concept and will jump the shallow throw. Recognize zone drops from the linebackers sinking hard underneath, which shuts down the mesh crossers and means you should climb the ladder to the seam route or bail to the comeback.
Usage Tips
Use this on second or third and medium when you need a quick answer against man coverage since the mesh crossers naturally rub off defenders in man scheme fits.
Presnap, check for man indicators like tight press corners or a single high safety, since the mesh action loses value against soft zone shells that just sit and read.
Hot route the backside comeback into a shallow drag if you see a corner sitting deep, giving you a faster underneath option against zone drops.
Pair this with Trail Shake or Y Cross Flood in your play-calling sequence so the defense has to respect both mesh crossing action and flood concepts from the same formation.
