OAK Under out of Shotgun Trey Open is a play action flood concept designed to attack the strong side of the field while giving the QB a screen valve if the pass rush wins early. To the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep go route to clear the top, the middle receiver breaks off an out route at intermediate depth, and the inside slot releases on a corner route that settles between the two, creating a natural flood that stretches zone defenders vertically and horizontally. On the backside, the single receiver runs a deep crossing route away from the flood, while the HB releases on a swing/screen route to the flat as the checkdown off play action. The primary read progresses from the corner route to the out route to the deep go, with the HB screen as the built in outlet against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth and spacing: two high safeties who stay wide open up the flood concept to the trips side, especially the corner route sitting behind underneath zone defenders. Watch the flat or curl defender to the trips side postsnap, if he sinks too deep with the corner route the out route becomes uncontested for an easy completion. Against Cover 3, the deep third defender to the trips side has to choose between the go route and the corner route, creating a natural conflict the offense wants to exploit. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest liability for this play since the go route can win one on one and the corner route has no zone defender to sit behind. Watch for user controlled defenders lurking underneath the flood routes since a jumped out route or corner route can be picked off if the QB does not read the flat defender's leverage before throwing.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses are likely to sit in zone coverage and respect the play action fake off HB Draw or Inside Zone tendencies. Presnap, identify two high safety shells since the flood concept to the trips side is a strong Cover 2 beater, the corner route sits right in the seam between the flat defender and the deep half safety. Against Cover 3, key the flat defender: if he widens with the go route, throw the out route into the vacated zone before the corner from the middle can close. If the defense shows man coverage presnap, hot route the backside crosser into a quicker option or lean on the HB screen since the flood routes take longer to develop against tight man leverage. Pair this play with HB Slip Screen or Curls from the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and the deeper flood shot, and use Four Verticals as a companion call to punish defenses that start cheating underneath after seeing this route combo on tape.
