Empty Base is the pure five-wide look inside Shotgun, and it separates itself from every other set in the formation by removing the back from the backfield entirely. You are in 11 personnel (1 RB 1 TE), but the running back splits out as the number two or number three receiver depending on the strength call, and the tight end flexes into the slot. That gives you a 3x2 spread alignment with zero backfield help, which forces the defense to declare its coverage rotation before the snap. If the defense walks a linebacker out over your back, you have a speed mismatch. If they leave a safety deep and play two-high, you know you are looking at zone and can attack the intermediate windows with the crossing concepts in the set.
The play list is built around three families: quick game rhythm throws (Curl Flats, Hitches, Stick, Stick Z Post), deep spacing shots (Four Verticals, Verticals, 986, 686, 986switch), and mesh/crosser packages that punish man coverage (Mesh, Y Cross, Inside Cross, Drag Double Spot, Shock Shake Crossers, Slot Drive, Drive Under). The 3DRB and SLWR tags matter here because your best pass catching back and your slot receiver are the two players the defense has the hardest time matching. Motion the back across the formation and read whether a defender travels with him: that is your man/zone tell on nearly every snap, and it takes half a second.
What makes Empty Base dangerous in competitive play is that it comes with counters built in. Slot Pick Screen, WR Screen, WR Mid Screen, Mtn HB Screen, and Fk Screen Sluggo/Fk Screen Verts give you answers when the opponent starts pressing and blitzing to punish the empty backfield. QB Draw and Jet Touch Pass keep second level defenders honest when they start sinking into your crossers. You are trading pass protection for horizontal stress, and the whole set is about making the defense wrong before the ball is even snapped.
Motion the back or the flexed tight end across the formation on every snap to read man versus zone, then check to Mesh, Y Cross, or Inside Cross against man and Stick, Curl Flats, or Hitches against zone.
Use this set on third and medium to third and long where the defense is already in nickel or dime, because the spacing forces them to defend the full width of the field with sub package personnel.
When the opponent starts blitzing to punish the empty backfield, go straight to Slot Pick Screen, WR Screen, or Fk Screen Sluggo, and the pressure will stop by the next series.
Hot route the isolated backside receiver to a slant or fade when you see press man with no safety help over the top, and let your single high read tell you whether to work the concept or the iso.
QB Draw is your reset button when a user is playing deep middle and the defense is dropping eight, and it also punishes defenses that spread out their front to cover five wide.
