Shock Shake Crossers lines up out of Empty Base Shotgun with five receivers spread wide and no back in the backfield. The two outside receivers on each side push vertical seams up the numbers while the two inside slots run crossing routes underneath, one shallow drag settling into the middle of the field and one deep dig climbing across the opposite hash. This is a man beater built on natural picks from the crossing traffic, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser to see if a linebacker or nickel gets rubbed off, then works to the deep crosser sitting down in the void, before climbing to the vertical seams against soft zone shells.
Man coverage is exposed hard by the natural pick action created when the two crossers run through each other's landmarks, so watch for defenders getting hung up or trailing late. Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are deep and shaded to the numbers there is a soft void over the middle for the deep crosser to settle into. Zone defenses that spin to Cover 3 leave the flat defender and the middle linebacker in conflict, since both crossers threaten their drop zones at the same time. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow crosser's path, since a smart defender can jump the underneath route and bait a turnover. Disguised zone blitzes that bring five rushers can collapse the pocket before the deep crosser clears the traffic, so the quarterback needs to feel pressure and get to the shallow route quickly.
Motion the closest slot receiver pre-snap to identify man versus zone by watching if a defender follows across the formation.
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells by letting the crossers work through the seams where linebackers have to sink and re-route late.
Use this on second and medium or third and short since the shallow crosser is a quick underneath answer if the deep crosser is blanketed.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, hot route the shallow crosser into a quick out to give the quarterback an immediate outlet.
Pair this with Y Cross or Drive Under earlier in a series so linebackers start jumping the shallow crosser, then hit this play to let the deep dig break open behind them.
