Breakdown

Slot Drive comes out of Empty Base Shotgun with 11 personnel, spreading five eligible receivers wide to attack the entire field. The two outside receivers run vertical stems to clear coverage, the far left receiver runs a shallow out, and the play's namesake concept is the drive combo in the middle: the inside slot receiver runs a deep crossing route (drive) while the tight end works an under route from the opposite slot to settle underneath it, creating a natural pick/rub combo against man coverage. This is a Cover 4 beater built as a man beater, with the primary read progression starting on the deep drive route crossing the field, then working down to the shallow under route as the second option, and the backside out route as the checkdown against zone drops.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, since two safeties sitting deep and wide signals Cover 4 which this play is designed to exploit. Watch linebacker alignment over the middle, if they are sitting shallow and tight to the box they will struggle to get depth on the drive route in time. Post-snap, key the underneath defender assigned to the crosser, if he gets picked or rubbed by the under route the drive route will come open immediately. User-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone are the biggest threat to this concept, since they can jump the drive route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. Man coverage without a deep safety help defender is where this play is most dangerous, but disciplined zone drops with a rangy middle linebacker can close the window on the crossing route.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing Cover 4 or a two-high shell, since this play is specifically designed to attack quarters coverage where the drive route can split the safeties.

Use the vertical routes on both outside receivers to hold the cornerbacks and safeties deep, opening up the intermediate crossing lanes for the drive and under combo.

If you see man coverage with no help over the top, throw the deep drive route immediately off the crosser's rub against the underneath defender.

Against zone drops or Cover 3, work the under route as your primary read since it settles in the void vacated by flowing linebackers.

Pair this play with Y Cross or Four Verticals in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between deep crossing combos and true vertical stretches from the same Empty Base look.
