Slot Drive is a five-wide, no-back passing concept out of Shotgun Empty Base with 11 personnel. The play features a shallow drive route crossing under a deep dig from the opposite slot, two vertical clear-outs from the outside receivers, and an outside receiver on a quick out to the boundary, with the backside slot running a deep crossing route (the red route) that settles as the primary read. This is a zone beater designed to attack Cover 4 by working the drive route underneath linebackers while the vertical routes hold the safeties, with the deep cross serving as the first progression read against soft zone coverage.
Defensive Reads
Watch for Cover 4 shells with safeties aligned deep at the snap, this play is designed to exploit that exact shell. Key the flow of the middle linebacker and any hook or curl defender, if they carry the drive route deep it opens the crossing route behind them. Man coverage with inside leverage on the slot defenders will struggle to run with the deep crossing route, especially against off-man alignment. User players should look to sit in the passing lane of the shallow drive route or lurk the crosser to bait the quarterback into a mistake. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zones with a hard flat corner can jump the shallow drive route, so quarterbacks should be ready to reset to the deep cross as a secondary answer.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing two-high or four-across safety alignment since this play is built specifically to attack Cover 4 shells.
Key on the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow the drive route underneath will be a quick answer, if he bails deep the crosser has room to work.
Use the deep cross as your first read against zone, then work down to the shallow drive route if the underneath defenders squeeze the crosser.
Pair this play with Curl Flats or Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between quick game and the deeper drive concept.
Best called on second or third and medium when you need a defense to commit to underneath coverage before hitting the crosser behind them.
